Kaveh (Ethan)
At the time that The End of Magic was written, Ethan was quite young. He was sullen, but also quite contemplative, like when he asked, 'Daddy, does another life start after the end of the world?' or 'Is everything in New York made in China?'
Like many younger siblings, he tries to keep up with his older sister and to prove himself, sometimes to a fault. But fundamentally, Ethan is a kind and compassionate soul, whose love-hate relationship with his sisters is always more of the former than the later.
The other children in the story find themselves alone due to mistakes or missteps. Only Kaveh finds himself abandoned through no fault of his own. As a result, he harbors the resentment of a victim and tries too hard to prove himself. Kaveh becomes tempered and wise when the Garland helps him assert his own power and grants him a certain objectivity about his surroundings. In much the same way, Ethan is at his best when he finds his own unique way to distinguish himself.
